Storytelling - Part 1: Preparing
Understand that a story is an abstraction. It is separate from copy paper, Bristol board, stone, canvas, ink, oil paint, typewriter ribbon, printer toner, pencils, pads, cameras, memory cards, film, and everything else related to a medium. A story is-what-it-is apart from being fixed in a medium. A story is an idea. It is abstract. If we consider it in terms analogous to figure drawing, it is like gesture. That is, it is the action conceived as a whole before the subject is drawn. It is no mere coincidence that artists (particularly animators) call the gesture the story!
Fathoming that, let's consider the value of three scenarios with respect to telling a story.
